The human right to education guarantees every child access to quality schools and services without discrimination. Although there is no federally guaranteed right to education in the U.S., the right to education is recognized in all fifty state constitutions. However, millions of young people are not protected from violations of their human right to a quality education. Ann Theisen and Emily Farell, Associates in the Education Program at The Advocates for Human Rights will provide an overview of the shortfalls the U.S. is facing in fulfilling the right to an education focusing on the obligations to ensure equity and non-discrimination, account for outcomes, and invest to the maximum of available resources. Additionally, the speakers will discuss specific barriers to and strategies for achieving the right to education nationally and in Minnesota.
Ann Theisen is a Program Associate in the Human Rights Education Program at The Advocates for Human Rights. Ms. Theisen received a Masters of Public Affairs in social and educational policy from the Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota and a B.A. in Spanish and English Education at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire.
