Women’s Human Rights Film Series

 

Free and open to the public

All films begin at 7 p.m.

 

September 22 at the Rice Street Branch Library, 1011 Rice Street:  “The Vienna Tribunal”, a documentary of the 1993 international human rights conference at which women from around the world presented powerful personal testimonies about violations of women’s human rights.  Cheryl Thomas, Director of the Women’s Program, will host the screening and facilitate a discussion afterwards.

 

October 11 at the Merriam Park Branch Library, 1831 Marshall Avenue:  “Operation Fine Girl”, a documentary that focuses on rape and other gender-based abuses used as weapons of war in Sierra Leone.  Rose Park, a staff attorney in the Women’s Program and member of The Advocates’ human rights monitoring team to Sierra Leone in 2004, will moderate a discussion of the film.

 

November 17 at the Arlington Hills Branch Library, 1105 Greenbrier Street:  ¡Basta! Women Say No to Violence”, the personal stories of more than a dozen survivors of violence, who share the steps they took to overcome abusive situations.  After the film, The Advocates staff attorney Rebecca Palmer will facilitate discussion and include a brief presentation on the Battered Refugee and Immigrant Women Project, addressing domestic violence in the refugee and immigrant community here in the Twin Cities. 

 

November 29 at the Hamline Midway Branch Library, 1558 W. Minnehaha Avenue:  “Peace by Peace: Women on the Frontlines”, a documentary that celebrates women who work to build peace out of conflict and crisis.  Malinda Schmiechen, staff attorney in The Advocates' Refugee and Immigrant Program, will facilitate discussion after the film.
